Staying Positive

My rare blood cancer remains in remission. While I have the energy, I’m taking big bites from the apple of life and am looking for collaborators. I don’t need to do every part of every project and working with others makes everything better. If you have ideas about the projects below, let me know!

Julian Speaks: Julian Priester, artist-in-residence at the Seattle Jazz Fellowship (SJF), tells his life story on the first Saturday of every month. I have been invited to interview Julian and probe some lesser told chapters. I have created a brochure of photos, info, and timeline. My research into Julian’s fascinating life and times continues. Collaborators include Julian’s videographer son Atuanya Priester and SJF founder Thomas Marriott.

Jazz in Jet City – 60th Anniversary of John Coltrane Taking Off in Seattle: I have long been on the trail of witnesses to Coltrane’s 1965 week-long visit, when he self-produced two recordings for the only time in his career and played live a very rare and important work from his repertoire, A Love Supreme. From September 27 through October 2, 2025, I am preparing an exhibit, oral histories, listening sessions, and live performances. Collaborators include historians and writers Lewis Porter and Yasuhiro Fujioka.

Gung Ho! Expelling Chinese from Seattle: On February 7, 1886, a lethal riot broke out in Seattle during the expulsion of Chinese from Seattle. “The Chinese entered America as migrants and were made into aliens, in law and society. Through a halting process of exclusion at the local, national, and international levels, the Chinese migrant became the quintessential alien in America by the turn of the twentieth century,” wrote Beth Lew-Williams in The Chinese Must Go: Violence, Exclusion, and the Making of the Alien in America. I am planning a new program of stories and music to premiere on the 140th anniversary of the riot.

Creative Artist Fellowship in Japan: If I am awarded a fellowship, I will spend three months in Tokyo improvising with the 83-year-old Japanese jazz piano master Masahiko Satoh. We have been corresponding via email.

Dowsing at the Chapel: Dowsing returns! Free improvisation with Ruben Griggs on electronics and Greg Campbell on percussion.

Reunion Dues: My bandmates from the early 1980s in central Illinois reunite in Seattle for some fun. Collaborators include keyboardist Mike Kocour and percussionist Jeff Stitely.

Listen and Hang: After experiencing a sacred listening environment at Cafe Quasimodo in Kyoto, I’m returning to an activity from my youth – listening to jazz vinyl with friends. My first session was a blast! More to come.
